Gaucin

Gaucin:

About 40 minutes at 656 meters high above the sea, from the coast between Casares and Ronda. Gaucin is one of the most enchanting little white villages you come across while travelling around the Andalusia countryside.As you approach you will encounter a cluster of whitewashed houses, topped by red roofs, spread out beneath the rocks.

Monuments to visit:

The old Moorish fortress :”el Castillo de Aguila” (Eagle Castle). Built in the X century now partly restored, stands high above the village, forming a silhouette against the backdrop of mountains. From this vantage point there are magnificent views across the valley of the Guadiaro River, reaching out to the coastline as far as the Rock of Gibraltar.

You will find as well the Hermitage of “el Santo Niño” build in the XVII century.

Others point of interest are “San Sebastian “ church from the XVI century and on the main square of the village the fountain of “los Seis Cantos” and the Convent of the “Carmelitas Descalzados” both  from the XVIII Century.

 The  village is delightful and is filled with flowers and plants. Its narrow streets and one-

way system are not conducive to driving, however, and the place is best explored on foot.

Terracotta floors, white-painted walls and the well- preserved wine press system define the cozy- style of the restaurant. The dining-room extends naturally into the patio where you can enjoy the pergola and the views over Africa and Gibraltar. It is a cuisine with a strong Mediterranean accent, featuring local product like the Iberic Pork, olive oil and sweet wines. The result is true Spanish and Andalucian dishes with a delicate touch of imagination and creativity.
