Gibraltar: The Rock as it is commonly know, is a popular dat trip from the Costa del Sol and is increasingly developing into a fascinating destination.

Gibraltar is very much like Britain, with double-decker buses, red post boxes, British- uniformed police and familiar shopping chains like BHS, Top shop and Mark& Spencer. The main street has been transformed in recent years into a beautiful pedestrian shopping area.

Shopping there is particularly attractive by the fact that it is free of taxes: like tobacco, perfumes or put the full of petrol is very interesting. But do not forget that you will have to cross the custom at border to go back to Spain and you are just allowed at 2 large boxes of cigarette per person.

Shops in Gibraltar tend to follow British rather than Spanish opening hours. The majority of shops open from 09.00 to 18.00 Monday to Friday although some remain open a bit later. On Saturday most shops close at 13.30 with a minority opened till 4.00

The shops are closed on Sundays unless a cruise ship is in port.

Places of interest

There are plenty of sights that help illustrate a history that stretches back to prehistoric times; a Neanderthal skull was discovered in one of the rock’s caves in 1848, a reproduction of which can be seen in the Gibraltar museum.

Gibraltar museum :This fascinating museum has displays including a Hackney carriage, Phoenician pots and bowls, Lord Nelson shoe buckle, marine and mammal exhibits and a Neanderthal skull discovered in Forbes Quarry. It is also houses a beautiful restored 14^th century Moorish bathhouse. Mon. Sat 10-6, Sat 10-2

The Upper Rock Reserve :Entry to this natural reserve included St Michael’ Cave is also a performing arts venue and is stunning with its large cavern spaces hung with stalagmites.

Have some fun with the Gibraltar Monkey “the Barbary Apes” are an unusual and delightful attraction for anyone visiting Gibraltar. No one is really sure how the only wild apes in Europe arrived in here. The two most popular explanations is either they crossed via a subterranean tunnel from their native Morocco or British sailors introduced them having picked them up on their travels

How to arrive:Located at 50km from Estepona take the AP 7 till the exit 119 and at San roque take direction “La Linea de la Concepcion” here is the border of England where you need to present your passport. You can get there by car, by bus or walking.
